Many subs have been doing their job for years, but that is not to say they can't sharpen their old tricks and benefit from some new ones. This practical course aims to enliven even the most world-weary of sub-editors.

Sub-editors and chief subs with at least two years' experience.

What will I learn?

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  •  Polish up skills by working on copy from your own publication and those of other delegates
  • Benefit from practical exercises including headline and standfirst writing as well as subbing problem copy
  • Deal with difficult writers and tackle technical copy
  • Analyse your own publication with the help of the trainer and other delegates
  • Devise an action plan to take back to the office

Back to Basics  What we know we should be doing:  a group discussion which looks at problems relating to delegate's respective titles

Hone and Strengthen Subbing Skills  Making the most of news stories  Ensuring headlines, standfirsts and intros work hard (for features and news)  Maximising captions  Enlivening repetitive copy
